The Sailing Club

Produced in association with Dauntsey's School

The Sailing Club has run since the mid 1970's when the club gained the use of Griffin II.

1n 1977 the school gained the use of Jolie Brise for the School Sailing Club instead of Griffin II.

From 1977 until 1992 pupils sailed throughout the whole of northern Europe on board Jolie Brise.

A major re-fit was completed in Gloucester in 1993 in time for Jolie Brise to compete in her first Fastnet race since 1931.

The Sailing Club is completely voluntary and is open to all pupils at Dauntsey's from Year 10 upwards, membership costs £15 per term, which is charged to the school bill.

One of the two main activities which involve the pupils is working on Jolie Brise, a pilot cutter built in 1913, during the winter helping with the maintenance. For most members of the Sailing Club they come down to Hamble near Southampton - where Jolie Brise is based - for about one weekend a year, to earn their "Brownie Points" to ensure places on Easter, Summer and Half Term Cruises.

The Cruises are the other main part of the Sailing Club. There are usually two or three during the Easter holidays, one during the Summer and Autumn Half Terms, and six during the Summer holidays.

Jolie Brise, when sailing, is always skippered by a fully qualified commercial skipper and also a qualified commercial first mate. We are also a recognised Sail Training Vessel and RYA Teaching Establishment, which means that we come under the most stringent safety regulations in the world.

We very much encourage parents to both help out on work parties, come to the Annual Dinner and also come sailing on Jolie Brise to help make up the adult part of the crew.

Pupil members of the Sailing Club who have left Dauntsey's are encouraged to re-join, and a good proportion always do. People who have chartered Jolie Brise very often join the Sailing Club as Associate Members.

If you would like to become a pupil or associate member, would be interested in chartering Jolie Brise, or feel you can help the club in any way, please don't hesitate to contact:
